I bought this receiver approx. a year ago, and like the other reviewer, worked absolutely fine. After about 9 months to a year, it would not recognize the DVD player plugged in via hdmi. A few months later, it wouldn’t recognize the cable box plugged in via hdmi. I had to turn it on maybe 30 to 50 times in a row before it would register the cable/tv. When that quit working I just left it turned on and it could be an hour, could be a week before it started working. Now it won’t work at all, so I just threw it away. Won’t buy another one of these.

Our SR-606 reciever has been in the shop for about 2 months. The service is a joke. Call Onkyo and get treated like your nothing.

My motive for writing this review is not to flame/burn Onkyo but to praise Amazon Customer support.

This entire incident started with a bang. OK, specifically, it was a loud snap and fizzle accompanied with smoke and fire. To some of you naysayers and Onkyo groupies that shrug it off or say that is not possible, I say WRONG…! I turned on my TX504 and it did that exactly – in front of a reliable witness, if my word is not enough.

So I call Onkyo to get it repaired or check my available options. It was way out of warranty, but that’s OK because it had provided good sound for a long time. Well, here is where it goes into the abyss.

Simple question, “What are my options?” The rep needed basic customer service skills school. It was not a positive experience even after I had invested time in 3 phone calls that added up to 1hr and 20 minutes of hold time and then they closed for business while I was holding. Trust me, you don’t want to be listening to their hold message for long because it would drive anyone to commit a series of misdemeanors. That hold message is terrible, with the repeating, over and over and over…. The option to “Receive a Return Call” did not work.

So, I call back the next day and it gets uglier. I got promises of a supervisor to call back which did not happen until five days later, after another one of my phone calls.

So I did exactly what they expected and I gave up.

Now, I still need to replace the TX504. Onkyo’s offer was to sell me a refurbished model, which I need to qualify for, and I pay the $90 to $120 shipping – which wasn’t that appealing, so after reading reviews on most of the receivers in my price range, I came back to Onkyo.

After much research and days of procrastination, I finally pull the trigger and make the buy at Amazon. It was the smartest move I could have made, as I find out later.

Days of mild excitement and anticipation of not having to listen to the TV speakers on the 65″ Mitsubishi *and* it arrived earlier than we expected – a whole week before my wife’s birthday! I should have had a red flag pop up, but it was great to open the box and connect to the power-hungry speakers waiting to get fed 100 watts/channel. Commence hook-up!

And then…

No Sound. Hmmm… No sound. I’m thinking, “It must be me. What did I do wrong? Why can’t I get sound out of it?”

So, I wait impatiently all weekend to call Onkyo. The first rep must have missed the basic customer service skills school, just like his associate. He could not resolve the issue on the phone and asked if he could call back in 30 minutes. I said no problem, then waited 3 hours for a 30 minute call-back arrangement. Giving up on that, I called back and got Bob. He tried to help… All the way until there was a silence on his end and I said, “I’ve got a bad feeling, Bob.” Like a doctor that doesn’t want to tell you the bad news, Bob suggested that I return the brand new device.

It is my wife’s birthday this weekend, and this is “the big present” – to accompany the “big party” we’re having.

Enter the Amazon Customer service reps. Things get better! Jane O. listens to what I told her and she immediately resolved it by sending a new Onkyo 608 out by priority air and contacted UPS to pick up the useless one. She said happy birthday to my wife and we were put back on the waiting to hear cool sounds from our new Onkyo in on-the-way mode, in time for the party we’re having this weekend.

So, I go to this page to write -not a review- but a summary of my experiences so far. I find that in the few days since I purchased this, the price was reduced on Amazon. I called back and spoke to Kristen. She listened to me and gave me a one-time-only credit for the difference in price and applied it to my card.

Now, I wait for the delivery and when I get this one hooked up I will write a review on the product -and not the Onkyo customer service experience- I hope.

Aloha from Hawaii!

I waited patiently for the release of this receiver which punches well above its weight, sporting features one would expect to see in the TX-SR7xx series. I don’t have a single bad word to say about it and am happy to see the bar significantly raised for entry-level and top end equipment alike.
